Dambulla Cave Temple
Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is one of Sri Lanka’s most important ancient Buddhist sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cave monastery has been a sacred pilgrimage place for more than 2,000 years, with its early development traditionally linked to King Valagamba (Vattagamani Abhaya) in the 1st century BCE.
According to tradition, King Valagamba sheltered in the Dambulla caves while in exile and later developed the site as a Buddhist monastery after regaining his throne. Successive kings contributed to the complex over the centuries, creating an extraordinary collection of Buddhist statues, murals and religious art.
The principal complex contains five cave shrines, more than 150 Buddha images and extensive paintings across the rock ceilings and walls. Its combination of ancient history, Buddhist heritage, art and architecture makes Dambulla Cave Temple an essential stop within Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle.
