Pidurangala Rock
Pidurangala Rock is a spectacular ancient rock formation and Buddhist heritage site located just a few kilometres north of Sigiriya in Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle. Although today it is famous for offering one of the best panoramic views of Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Pidurangala has its own fascinating history stretching back more than 1,500 years.
The site is closely associated with King Kashyapa I, who ruled from Sigiriya during the 5th century CE. Buddhist monks were established around Pidurangala, and the historic monastery complex includes caves, religious remains and an impressive reclining Buddha statue.
Today, Pidurangala combines ancient Buddhist heritage, hiking and spectacular scenery, making it one of the most rewarding outdoor experiences around Sigiriya.
Why You Chose Pidurangala Rock
The biggest reason to visit Pidurangala is its extraordinary 360-degree panoramic view, including the iconic profile of Sigiriya Rock rising dramatically above the surrounding forests and plains. It is especially popular for sunrise and sunset, when the landscape is illuminated by soft golden light. Compared with visiting Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the Pidurangala experience is more focused on hiking, scenery, photography and adventure, while still offering an interesting connection to Sri Lanka's ancient Buddhist history. For travelers staying in Sigiriya, visiting both Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Pidurangala Rock provides two very different but complementary experiences.
