Wilpattu National Park

Located in Sri Lanka’s North Western and North Central Provinces, Wilpattu National Park spans over 1,300 square kilometers, making it the country’s largest and one of its oldest protected wildlife reserves. Established in 1938, the park is famous for its peaceful atmosphere, dense forests, open grasslands, and distinctive natural lakes called “Villus”, which create ideal habitats for a wide variety of wildlife.

Wilpattu is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to spot the Sri Lankan leopard, thanks to its extensive wilderness and healthy predator population. Visitors may also encounter Asian elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, sambar deer, crocodiles, water buffalo, wild boars, and over 230 species of birds.

Unlike busier safari destinations, Wilpattu offers a quieter and more exclusive wildlife experience, allowing visitors to enjoy nature in its purest form. Whether you’re a wildlife photographer, birdwatcher, or adventure enthusiast, Wilpattu promises an unforgettable journey through one of Sri Lanka’s most pristine ecosystems.
