Minneriya National Park

Situated in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, Minneriya National Park covers approximately 8,890 hectares and is one of the island’s premier wildlife reserves. Established in 1997, the park surrounds the historic Minneriya Tank, an ancient reservoir built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD, which continues to support the region’s rich biodiversity.

Minneriya is internationally renowned for “The Gathering,” a remarkable natural event where hundreds of wild Asian elephants converge around the reservoir during the dry season. Recognized as one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in Asia, this event attracts wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and nature lovers from around the world.

In addition to elephants, the park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including Sri Lankan leopards, sloth bears, spotted deer, sambar deer, wild buffalo, crocodiles, monkeys, and over 170 species of birds. Its beautiful landscapes of open grasslands, scrub forests, wetlands, and the expansive reservoir create the perfect setting for an unforgettable safari adventure.

Minneriya is an ideal destination for families, photographers, birdwatchers, and anyone wishing to experience Sri Lanka’s extraordinary wildlife in its natural habitat.
